Percale uses a simple one-over, one-under plain weave, creating a matte finish with a crisp, cool hand feel. Percale is more breathable and typically more durable than sateen of the same thread count.
Thread Count: The Numbers Game
Thread count without context is meaningless. A 400TC sateen can feel smoother than a 600TC percale because of weave structure. For sateen, the sweet spot is 300-600 TC. For percale, 200-400 TC is ideal — higher counts can make fabric stiff and less breathable. Durability and Maintenance
Percale generally outperforms sateen in commercial laundry. Its tighter weave withstands higher temperatures and aggressive chemicals better. In our testing, percale maintained quality for approximately 200 commercial wash cycles versus 150-170 for sateen. However, sateen's wrinkle resistance means less pressing labor — important for in-house laundry operations. For retail and DTC brands, sateen's wrinkle resistance appeals to consumers who do not iron, while percale's crispness appeals to those who want the classic hotel bed feel.
